Now, I'm usually not one to jump at a survivalist thriller, but I'm trying to dibble dabble in a few different tropes because the plain ole domestic ones are letting me down. The setting of the book was atmospheric and well-written, and definitely added another layer to the story. We get inside the head of each character, so we learn that Cat has actually been cheating on her husband Paul with her sister’s husband, Tristan.It works reasonably well as a thriller plot in its own right but the book amounts to so much more than this. Often hilarious, as you would expect any book by Magary to be, but like The Postmortal there is a real darkness and thoughtfulness to Ben's journey that will keep you engrossed.

Even though it incorporates a number of elements from spec fic genres, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter; it’s going to do its own thing. Do you think things could have panned out differently if they were all equally on board with the hike? That wasn't so much the issue, but the name "Leif" being pronounced "life" instead of "lay-f" annoyed the hell out of me.

In addition to the glimpse into the future at the police station, there is a considerable amount of foreshadowing in this book.With a cast of gloriously unlikeable characters, any one of them could be the murderer, and any of them could be dead. Upon arriving, they learn that Maggie is a ~dead ringer~ (sorry for these puns) for a girl who went missing on the mountain almost a year to the date before.
