The gin is soft and smooth with a citrus profile but soon to be taking over by a peppery-warmth as the gin leaves you mouth. There’s no rush; we’re here for the long-term and believe in what we’re doing, which has driven this ambitious project from its conception.

Sadly, the tree was damaged by fire in the 1930’s, but the remains can still be seen today for those wanting to explore the woods during a visit to the Distillery.We try to work closely with other local organisations, enterprises, and businesses to support each other's work through creative ideas and collaborations when we can. The finished result is a complex yet perfectly balanced, smooth dry gin, with a wonderful floral nose. A long time ago I announced that I would make a review of it so I guess now it’s time for a review of Isle of Harris Gin. McLean’s Strathaven Hedgerow is a London Dry gin that uses botanicals exclusively foraged within a five mile radius of the McLean’s Gin Lab. The old entrance sign to the woods has influenced the bespoke bottle lettering, and the Victorian flourishes on the label give it a sense of place, linking it to the Wire Works of the 19th century in which our gin is now made.

McLean’s Gin started in an inconspicuous tenement flat, in Battlefield in the Southside of Glasgow, known as the “gin cupboard”, possibly one of the smallest, nano gin operations in Europe. SHINING CLIFF GIN The inspiration for our Shining Cliff Gin lies right behind our Distillery – the ancient woodland of Shining Cliff Woods – from the botanicals we’ve chosen to the bottle design.

In 2024 we plan to double-down on this commitment to our community with an exciting new initiative, so watch this space. McLean’s Spiced Gin is now a seasonal release, available as a festive winter warmer between November to January. Steve combines Bombay Sapphire gin, Maraschino liqueur, orgeat (almond) syrup, lime juice and an egg white. As a leading visitor destination in the Outer Hebrides we strive to bring others closer to this special place and inspire them to visit.

The palate features juniper delivering a resinous, fresh pine along with soft fruits, florals, some herbaceous notes that all intertwine to create a gin that’s rich in flavour, balanced and delicious. They travelled each year from Papplewick to help with charcoal burning, and eventually stayed on permanently to live in the woods.
